Sigma Xi History
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, has been at the forefront of promoting scientific achievement and fostering innovative research for over a century. Sigma Xi is dedicated to strengthening the research community, upholding scientific and engineering integrity, advancing public science literacy, and nurturing early-career researchers and STEM education.
Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 at Cornell University, its name being the acronym for the Society’s motto: “Spoudon Xynones,” meaning “Companion in Zealous Research” in Greek. From its humble beginnings at Cornell, Sigma Xi rapidly expanded to other institutions across the United States. Today, it’s an international organization with hundreds of chapters worldwide.
Membership is by invitation only, based on notable achievements or potential in scientific research. This selective process has led to the induction of many distinguished scientists, including over 200 Nobel Prize winners.
Throughout its history, Sigma Xi has supported scientific research through various programs, including the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, established in 1922, which provides funding for early-career scientists, and American Scientist magazine, launched in 1913, which continues to be a respected publication in the scientific community.
Over the decades, Sigma Xi has evolved to meet the changing needs of the scientific community. It has expanded its focus to include interdisciplinary research, science policy, and science education. Sigma Xi has been instrumental in promoting ethics in scientific research and enhancing public understanding of science.
The organization operates through local chapters at universities and research institutions worldwide. Each chapter, including our Rice University-Texas Medical Center Chapter, contributes to Sigma Xi’s mission while serving its local scientific community.

Rice-TMC Chapter History
The Rice University-Texas Medical Center Chapter of Sigma Xi was established in 1938 at Rice University, forging a crucial link between this esteemed institution, known for its robust research initiatives, and the Texas Medical Center (TMC), renowned as one of the globe’s largest medical complexes. This strategic alliance has uniquely positioned us to foster interdisciplinary collaborations and propel scientific advancement in unparalleled ways. Our chapter thrives on the proximity to these two world-class entities, facilitating exceptional opportunities for our members to engage in cross-disciplinary cooperation and drive cutting-edge research initiatives.
Over the years, our chapter has supported numerous joint research projects between Rice and TMC institutions. The close proximity of Rice’s BioScience Research Collaborative to the TMC has been instrumental in facilitating these partnerships, particularly in the field of biomedical research. We take pride in initiatives such as the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars program, which offers exceptional Rice undergraduates a distinctive pathway into Baylor College of Medicine, underscoring our dedication to cultivating future leaders in science and medicine.
At the Sigma Xi Rice TMC Chapter we are committed to promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration. Our events and programs bring together diverse scientific minds from engineering, natural sciences, and medical fields, fostering innovation and breakthrough discoveries. Through our diverse array of events and programs, spanning engineering, natural sciences, and medical fields, we actively cultivate innovation and facilitate breakthrough discoveries. Throughout our history, our members have been instrumental in advancing significant scientific frontiers, from pioneering applications of nanotechnology in medicine to groundbreaking cancer research, all driven by the collaborative ethos of our chapter.
Today, our chapter remains devoted its mission of advancing scientific research and celebrating scientific achievement. We host regular events and seminar series that bring together researchers from both Rice and TMC, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing. Notably, the Millicent E. Goldschmidt Seminar Series, a flagship quarterly virtual event, has become a cornerstone of our chapter, providing a platform for researchers to showcase their latest findings and insights.
As we move forward, the Sigma Xi Rice TMC Chapter remains dedicated tto fostering scientific excellence and collaboration between Rice University and the Texas Medical Center. We continue to support early-career scientists, recognize outstanding research, and promote public understanding of science.
